Biotech is a field of applied science that blends science and technology and then incorporates the two into life science. Through these methods, agriculturalist and experts have managed to improve the agricultural sector in most countries. There are so many ways through which they have done this. Firstly, it has helped in improving crop yield. There are some crops that don’t produce sufficient yields. This may be because of a specific number of reasons. It involves transferring one or two genes from one crop to another similar crop. These genes cause the receiving crop to acquire a characteristic that the donor crop had. Experts therefore isolate genes that increase fertility in certain plants and transfer them to other plants. This is however a complicated process and scientists are still wedged in un-ending research over the matter.

 

Biotechnology has also been used to reduce vulnerability to certain diseases. This is particularly so when it comes to drought resistance and soils with alarming levels of salinity. This process involves the transfer of genes from plants with high resistance to harsh conditions to plants with other desirable characteristics but poor resistance to harsh conditions. This has had ground breaking effects on the agricultural sector. It has allowed certain agricultural institutes to provide seeds for planting in drought-stricken areas. This has helped to combat the problem of famine in some areas. It has also brought public awareness about the many ways of combating poor climatic conditions in respect to crops.

Biotech has also been used to increase the nutritional value of food. For instance, if a particular type of crop is supposed to provide vitamins, biological processes can be used to increase its nutritional value. This involves the process of transferring genes from other nutritious plants and implanting them in the cells of the desires plant. This process demands adverse knowledge and application of biotechnology. It has also helped in improving the agricultural field. This is because agriculturalists can now offer crops that are in line with consumer demands.
